Portable Fire Cooking for Camp and Patio

· October 9, 2026

Why portable fire gear still matters at home

A lot of outdoor cooks start with camping trips, beach fires, or a simple backyard pit. You want wood or charcoal flavor, quick setup, and gear that packs down when the weekend ends. Later you may add a fixed patio line. Until then, solid portable tools keep you cooking well.

At Austin Outdoor Kitchens we sell full islands and Pro-Sear grills, and we also stock StarBBQ pieces built for campsites and fire pits. Pair those with a compact Ruby companion unit and you cover trail cooking and home nights without waiting on a big build. Below is how three pieces fit that path.

The fold-out campfire grill and griddle

The StarBBQ Heavy-Duty Steel Fold-Out Camper Griller (STARBBQ-FUFP) is a 2-in-1 surface. Half is slotted for sear marks. Half is a smooth griddle for eggs, vegetables, or anything that would fall through open grates.

It uses cold-rolled steel with a high-heat resistant powder coating, so it stands up over open flame. Fold-out legs and a compact grill surface make it easy to haul. You set it over a campfire or fire pit so air moves under the food and heat stays even. No propane tank. No complex manifold. Wood or charcoal only, which is the point when you want smoky taste and a light pack.

Use cases are plain: camping, hiking base camps, beach bonfires, tailgates, and the fire pit behind the house. Breakfast on the griddle side, then flip steaks or burgers onto the slotted half. When you break camp, it folds and rides with the rest of the kit.

Rocket heat from twigs in under a minute

When you need intense heat from small fuel, the StarBBQ Rocket Stove Camper Box (STARBBQ-RSBBOX) earns its keep. The body is a genuine military-grade M2A1 .50 cal ammo can in cold-rolled steel, with an airtight gasket. That seal keeps water and dust out when it rides in a truck bed or trailer.

Setup is quick: fold-out design, collapsible chimney, folding legs. It comes together in under 60 seconds. Fuel is biomass you already have on site—twigs and sticks. The design pushes heat hard; the unit is rated for intense heat over 1,100°F. That is enough for a kettle, a pan, or a small pot when you are off-grid.

The lid converts to a 15½" × 11½" steel side table for prep. That small detail matters when you have one flat surface and a cutting board on your knees is not ideal. Off-grid camping, overlanding, bushcraft, and emergency kits are the obvious fits. It also works next to a fire pit when you want a dedicated high-heat burner without dragging a gas bottle outside.

A compact infrared unit for the patio

Portable fire gear covers the trail. At home you may still want a fixed or semi-fixed cook surface that does more than one job and does not eat the whole deck. The Ruby Series 13" Companion Pro GRILLER (SUN13CPROGR) is built for that gap.

Dual infrared burners deliver up to 30,000 BTUs. In a 13-inch width you can grill, sear, griddle, smoke, steam, and fry. Construction is 304 stainless steel. An integrated hood and warming rack help hold heat and give you a place for finished food while the next round cooks.

That footprint fits smaller patios, apartment decks with outdoor rules that allow gas or infrared, and side stations next to a larger grill later. It is not a replacement for a full 36-inch cook line. It is the piece you use when space is tight and you still want real searing power and multi-method cooking in one box.

How the three pieces work as a set

Think in layers, not as a single purchase. The fold-out camper griller handles open-fire meals for a small group. The rocket stove handles boil-up, coffee, and high-heat pan work from scrap wood. The 13-inch companion unit sits on the patio for weeknights when you want infrared sear and a hood without lighting a pit.

On a camping weekend you leave the companion at home and pack the two StarBBQ units. At home you leave the ammo-can stove in the shed for power-out nights or pit days, and cook on the companion for regular meals. Nothing in that mix requires a full cabinet island on day one.

If you later add islands or a larger Ruby grill, these pieces do not become dead weight. The fold-out griller still goes to the lake. The rocket stove still runs on twigs. The companion stays as a side station for sides, sauce reduction, or overflow when guests show up.

Practical notes before you buy

Match fuel to the tool. The fold-out camper griller runs on wood or charcoal only. The rocket stove runs on biomass. The companion Pro GRILLER is an infrared gas unit for patio use—plan LP or NG the same way you would for any built-in burner. Do not expect one fuel type to cover all three.

Give each piece stable ground. Elevated legs on the fold-out grill need level placement over the fire for airflow. The rocket stove’s folding legs want firm dirt or a pad, not soft sand that tips a full pot. The companion unit needs a heat-safe counter or cart and clearances that match good outdoor practice.

Clean for the material you have. Cold-rolled steel over live fire will season and darken; that is normal. Wipe ash and loose debris after cool-down. 304 stainless on the companion unit cleans like other outdoor kitchen steel—mild soap, soft cloth, dry it so water spots do not sit.

For coverage details on Ruby pieces, see the warranty page. We do not restate terms in blog posts because the live page is the source of truth.

Where this fits in a longer outdoor kitchen plan

Sunstone Metal Products has built outdoor kitchen equipment in Pflugerville, TX since 2001. Austin Outdoor Kitchens is how many buyers meet that line: Pro-Sear grills, cabinet islands, StarBBQ fire gear, and components. Cabinets are 304 stainless. Islands ship about 98% pre-assembled. Grill cabinets fit about 90% of grill brands with trim kits. That is the permanent path when you are ready.

You do not have to start there. Free freight goes to the 48 contiguous states, typically in 5–10 business days. Local pickup in Pflugerville saves 5% if you are close. If you want help laying out a future island around the companion unit, use the free design service. Dealer locations are on the dealers page if you prefer a showroom visit.

For pure charcoal or wood with no gas at all, remember the dedicated charcoal units in the line. SUNCHDZ28 is charcoal/wood only and never needs gas. Hybrid models that include a gas appliance need LP or NG. Pick the fuel path that matches how you actually cook, not the brochure photo.

A simple buying path

If most of your cooking is campsites and fire pits, start with the fold-out camper griller and add the rocket stove when you want boil-and-sear from twigs. If most of your cooking is the patio and you only camp a few times a year, start with the 13-inch companion Pro GRILLER and keep one StarBBQ piece for trips. If you do both often, own all three and assign them by location so nothing sits unused.

Call (888) 934-9449 or (512) 487-5116 Monday through Thursday, 9am–4:30pm CST, or email contact@sunstonemp.com if you need fitment help. Bring the size of your pit, cart, or cutout. We will tell you straight whether the fold-out grill, the ammo-can stove, or the 13-inch infrared unit is the right next step for how you cook.
